Chapter 18

The trooper on the left laughed at something and they both stopped to light cigarettes. Their lighter flared brightly for a moment, taking away a little of their night vision. They started walking again, their cigarettes glowing bright red as they puffed.

Ben slowly extended his arms, cupped the pistol and sighted on the left-hand trooper, aiming for the chest.

Twenty five feet... they took two more steps... he quickly pulled the trigger three times.

The shots cracked loudly over the sound of the rain. The trooper toppled backwards.

The other trooper was dropping right towards the side of the embankment. Ben tried to track his movement as he fired again but the man was moving too quickly.

He saw the man roll over the top.

He heard five sharp staccato gunshots.

“Ben, Mertin, Jacob, get over here quickly!” Matty called out.

Ben stood on shaking legs and moved to the other side of the road. “Get down here now!” Matty shouted. “You’re silhouetted up there!”

Ben saw one of Matty’s crew run crouched to the dead trooper and drag him down the embankment. He dropped onto his backside and slid down the muddy bank. Matty was waiting at the bottom.

“I killed him!” Ben said. He waved back up the bank with his pistol, “Did you see that?” he said.

Matty grabbed Ben’s wrist and pointed the gun at the ground. “Make the gun safe, you idiot!” he commanded.

Ben looked down and felt ashamed. “Yes, of course... sorry,” he said.

Matty saw Ben regain some composure, looked steadily into the older man’s eyes for a moment longer and then nodded as he released his hand.

Ben put the safety back on and holstered the gun under his jacket.

Matty clapped him on the shoulder. “Well done, Ben. Izza hard thing ta cap a man. Yoz did alright.”

“Yeah, right,” said Ben. “My hands are shaking.”

“It’s just the cold, man. Now weza movin fast. Yoz keep up, right?”

“Yes. Right. No problem,” said Ben. He abruptly realised that Samz and Jacob had been standing behind him, watching the whole thing. “I’m okay, let’s get going,” he said.

“Thirty minutes max along the ditch,” said Matty. “Get in and get moving!”

The rain was pouring down, pummelling their cold bodies, streaming from the brim of their hoods. Peering just over the top of the ditch they got their first good look at the `Plex Research Facility. It was less impressive than Samz had imagined, just a squat, metal-clad unit, windowless, about forty feet high, one hundred feet wide, and three hundred feet long. Steam was billowing from randomly spaced vents below the guttering. Each corner of the building had a tall pylon holding bright spotlights that illuminated the fence line. The chain-link fence was twenty feet high and carried high-voltage warning signs.

The symmetry of the building was broken by the reinforced guardhouse projecting from its side. It was clearly made of reinforced concrete blocks and had a single door on its front left-hand side. Fifteen feet to the right of the door, the window was a narrow slit.
